Furniture moving truck in Jeddah
A good split means what you need first arrives first

A simple idea: do not move everything at once

People tend to assume a move is a single day when everything is loaded and unloaded. That suits many situations but it is not the only way. In some cases splitting it into two stages is better: you move what you need right away, and leave the rest for a second stage days or weeks later. This eases the pressure, spreads the cost and gives you time to prepare the new home and empty the old one calmly.

At Al-Forsan we plan this kind of move often, especially for families whose lease ends before the new home is ready, people with more furniture than one truck can take, and those who want to try the new home before moving everything. If you prefer a single-day move, read how long a move takes and apartment moving in Jeddah.

When two stages are the smart choice

  • The new home is only partly ready: some rooms are finished and others need paint or repairs.
  • Two leases overlap: you have days or weeks that allow a gradual move between both places.
  • There is simply a lot of furniture: it does not fit one trip or would exhaust the crew and the lift in one day.
  • Children or older relatives: you want the family settled with the basics first.
  • A move to another city: the family goes with essentials first and the rest follows.
  • Cash flow: you prefer paying in two parts to one large payment in a single day.
  • Uncertainty about furniture: you want to see what suits the new home before moving everything.

What moves in stage one

Stage one covers what you cannot live without: beds and mattresses, kitchen basics, fridge and washer, daily clothes, children's and school items, essential electronics such as the TV and internet equipment, medicines and papers. This may be less than half the furniture. We sort it with you before the day and load so unloading is easy. See bedroom disassembly and installation, since the bedroom is usually first to arrive.

What waits for stage two

Large non-urgent pieces wait: extra majlis sets, guest rooms, big wardrobes you do not use daily, antiques and heavy furniture, non-essential cartons, garden furniture, storage items and seasonal belongings. Stage two may be physically harder because it holds the heaviest pieces, but it is calmer in time since nobody has to settle urgently.

Between the stages: where the furniture waits

An important question is where the unmoved items stay. You have three options:

  1. In the old home: workable if the lease is still running and the wait does not bother you.
  2. In a closed room of the new home: if it is partly ready and has space.
  3. In storage: useful when no other place is available; see furniture storage in Jeddah.

Each has a different cost and risk, and we help you choose once we know your situation.

Is two stages more expensive?

Often yes in the number of trips, since each trip needs a truck, a crew and time. But splitting can save elsewhere: no oversized truck, no long storage bill and no whole day of lift booking. The right comparison is not one trip against two but a plan that fits your circumstances against one that stumbles. Send us your situation and we will price both options. See furniture moving prices.

Organising the two stages on paper

Write two lists, what goes first and what goes later, and mark cartons by colour or with two clear words, "stage 1" and "stage 2". Write the room and contents on each carton. In the old home keep postponed items in one or two rooms so they do not scatter. This simple page stops an essential item going with stage two when you need it tonight.

Two stages when the old home must be returned

If you must hand back the old home before stage two, you cannot leave things there. You will need somewhere for what remains, usually storage. If the keys go back after stage two you can leave items in the old home until you finish. Read our guide to moving at lease end for what matters at handover, and photograph the home after each stage.

Risks of a two-stage move and how we limit them

The main risks are a piece going missing between stages, postponed items being exposed to dust, theft or damp, and tension in the family during the wait. We limit them with a written list, covers over postponed pieces, a locked room whose key you hold, and a fixed date for stage two. In Jeddah fabric and wood suffer if left uncovered for weeks, so cover them and ventilate the room.

How we load the truck for each stage

In stage one we load essentials in reverse of the order you need them on arrival, so the bed and the kitchen are near the door. In stage two we load the heaviest first and lighter pieces after. Sensitive appliances in stage one sit in a safe spot away from vibration. See moving electronics safely.

Two stages versus occasional single pieces

A two-stage move differs from moving one piece now and then. Two stages is a planned scheme: you know what goes and when. Occasional pieces are ad hoc and need a new crew each time. If you only want one or two pieces, a single-item move suits you better.

Typical situations where it works well

A family whose lease ends Thursday but whose new home is handed over a week later moves essentials to a relative's place or temporary accommodation, stores the rest, then moves everything in one run when the home is ready. A family moving into a partly finished villa moves bedrooms and kitchen first and leaves the majlis and lounge until the finishing work is done. A person transferred to another city goes first with essentials and moves large furniture once settled. These are general illustrations of the idea, not stories about named customers.

Common mistakes

  • No list of what moves at each stage: something important gets left.
  • Leaving postponed items uncovered: dust and damp.
  • Delaying stage two with no date: a temporary arrangement turns permanent.
  • Moving the wrong essentials: moving what you do not need and delaying what you do.
  • Not photographing the home between stages: a possible dispute with the landlord.
  • Booking a new crew for each stage without coordination: repeated questions and details.

Price factors

We do not publish fixed prices. Cost depends on the number of trips, the size of each, the distance, the floor and lift, dismantling and assembly, whether storage is needed between stages, and the date. Tell us what you plan to move in each stage and we will give an estimate per trip.

How to start

Message us on WhatsApp with what moves first and what waits, why you are splitting it, the dates of both leases, whether you need storage, and a photo of the new home. We will draft a two-stage schedule with suggested dates.

The small items forgotten in stage one

People forget little things that cause big irritation: spare lock keys, small assembly tools, bed slats, screwdrivers, bedroom curtains, bedding, a power strip and spare bulbs. Gather them in one carton marked "day-one essentials" and keep it in your car. That way you do not open dozens of cartons looking for a key or a screw.

Children and the school calendar

If your children are in school, do not schedule stage one in exam week and do not split the move so they sleep among boxes for weeks. It is best to include the whole children's room in stage one: bed, desk, clothes and school bags, because settled children make everything easier. Choose a date that does not clash with important holidays and tell the school the new address if it changes. See moving with kids.

A move to another city in two stages

When someone moves cities for work they may go first with essentials by car or a small shipment and move the rest after renting a home. This lowers risk because furniture is not shipped to a home they have not yet seen. For routes from Jeddah to other cities we have dedicated pages, such as Jeddah to Riyadh. Planning differs on long distances because each trip is expensive, so we suggest gathering essentials in one well-organised run.

Coordinating dates between stages

Agree the stage-two date before stage one starts and note it down. Leaving it open means we may be hunting for a crew and truck at a busy time. If the date changes, tell us in good time. During busy periods such as the start of the school year and the end of the month slots are scarce, so booking early is easier. If the same crew does both stages they will already know the building entrance and parking spots, which saves valuable time in the second run.

If the plan changes between stages

Things change between stages: the new home is late, part of the furniture is sold, or a family member decides to stay elsewhere. That is fine. Tell us about the change and we will adjust the plan and the estimate. The earlier you call, the easier and cheaper the change.

Frequently asked questions about two-stage moving

Is a two-stage move more expensive?

Trips add cost, but it can save on a large truck, long storage and a full day of lift booking. We estimate both options once we know your situation.

What goes in stage one?

The essentials: beds, kitchen basics, fridge, clothes, children’s items, papers and necessary appliances.

Where do the remaining items wait?

In the old home if the lease runs, in a closed room of the new home, or in storage.

Do I need the same crew in both stages?

Not required, but the same crew saves time. We try where the schedule allows.

Is it suitable for a move to another city?

Yes. Many people send essentials first and the large furniture after settling.

How do I protect the items that wait?

Cover them, close and ventilate the room, photograph them and keep the key with you.
