How long does moving take in Jeddah? The honest answer: it depends

One of the questions we hear most before any booking is: how long will the move take? The person asking wants to plan their day, take time off work, tell the landlord about the handover time and arrange the family and children. The honest answer is that the duration depends on many factors that cannot be settled by one number, and that any company that promises a fixed time without seeing the place or knowing the volume of furniture is promising something it cannot guarantee. That does not mean it is a mystery: there are clear factors that decide the duration, you can learn them, form a reasonable expectation yourself, and then ask for a detailed estimate after describing your case.

This page explains how moving time is determined within Jeddah, what lengthens it and what shortens it, how the time splits into stages, and what you can do to reduce it. We will not give you a magic number, but we will give you a way of thinking that makes your expectations realistic and spares you surprises.

The four stages that make up the time

Any move divides into four main stages, each with its own time. The first is preparation: dismantling, wrapping and emptying appliances. The second is loading: bringing furniture down and stacking it in the truck. The third is the road: travelling from the first address to the second. The fourth is unloading and assembly: bringing furniture in, rebuilding it and placing it. One stage may run long and another short depending on your case: for a small nearby flat the road stage may be very short, while for a large two-storey villa dismantling and loading may take most of the day.

The factors that decide the duration

  • Volume of furniture and number of rooms: the more furniture, the longer dismantling, wrapping and loading take.
  • Floor and lift: stairs slow loading compared with a lift or the ground floor.
  • Distance of truck parking from the entrance: every extra distance multiplies the number of trips back and forth.
  • Dismantling and assembly: dismantled furniture takes longer than furniture moved whole.
  • Packing: if you wrap your belongings beforehand you save many hours on the day.
  • Distance and traffic: duration differs between two neighbouring districts and two distant ones, and at peak hours.
  • Readiness of the new site: if it is not ready or nobody is there to receive the crew, work stops.

A general idea by size of home

We give a general picture here for comparison only, not a promise of a specific time, because every case differs. A studio or small one-bedroom flat near its new location may be finished in part of a day if everything is ready. A two- or three-bedroom flat generally needs about a full working day, especially with dismantling and assembly. A large villa or multi-storey house with a lot of furniture may need a full day or more, and may be split across two days if it is big or if there are heavy pieces needing special equipment. These descriptions are approximate and change with your situation.

Remember also that the time residents see is not only working time. Between the crew's arrival and departure there may be waits for the lift, for a building guard or for parking to be arranged. That is why we ask about these details early.

Table: what lengthens and what shortens the move

FactorLengthens whenShortens when
PackingIt has not started before the crew arrivesIt is finished beforehand and boxes are numbered
Floor and liftHigh floor without a lift or a small liftGround floor or a spacious lift booked in advance
Truck parkingFar away or restrictedAt the door and agreed with neighbours
Dismantling and assemblyA lot of furniture needs full dismantlingA few pieces that can be moved whole
Readiness of the new siteLocked, unclean or nobody to receiveReady, open and someone to direct the crew

How to reduce moving time yourself

The biggest source of time saved is what you do before the crew arrives. Finish packing small items, the kitchen and clothes in the days before, number boxes by room, empty the fridge and washing machine the day before, empty drawers and wardrobes of small items, and decide which pieces will not be moved. What you get rid of before the move needs no carrying or wrapping. If the crew can start dismantling and loading straight away without waiting for you to pack, that usually saves hours of the day. For more on preparation see our packing tips.

Hours of the day in Jeddah: heat and traffic

In summer Jeddah's heat and humidity affect working speed, so we need short breaks for rest and water, which can slow work around midday. At peak hours traffic between districts gets heavier, which lengthens the road stage. That is why we often prefer to start early in the morning, which gives a good margin before the peak and before midday. We discussed this further in our guide to planning moving and storage in Jeddah.

Can a move be completed in a few hours?

Yes in certain cases: the amount of furniture is small, packing is ready, the lift is available, the distance is short and the new site is ready. In those cases the move can be quick. But we do not advise aiming for the shortest possible time at the expense of safety, because too much speed means damage, breakage or forgotten items. What you want is the reasonable time that protects your furniture and belongings, not the shortest time possible.

What if the move takes longer than expected?

Surprises can arise: a piece that will not pass through the door and needs extra dismantling, a broken lift, an occupied parking space, or more belongings than the first description said. We tell you straight away what is happening and discuss the options: splitting the work over two periods, adding crew, or postponing part of it. That is why your accurate description and photos at the start reduce the chance of surprises, and we suggest you tell us everything you can think of about the site before the date.

Moving within a district versus between distant districts

Moving within the same district or between two neighbouring ones shortens the road stage, so the duration is governed by dismantling, loading and unloading more than by driving. Moving between the far north and the far south of the city, on the other hand, lengthens the road stage, especially at peak hours. Short distance does not always mean an easier move: moving within a district in a building with no lift can be harder than moving between two districts in a single-storey villa. See our furniture moving in Jeddah page for more on moves between districts.

Three scenarios that show the difference

The first scenario is a family moving from a two-bedroom ground-floor flat to a nearby flat in the same district, who have finished packing, numbered their boxes and emptied the fridge. Here the work is relatively quick because dismantling is limited, the distance is short and carrying is easy. The second is a family of four moving from a fourth-floor flat with no lift to a villa in a distant district, who did not start packing before moving day. Here preparation, carrying down the stairs and the road all take longer, and the job may need a full day or more. The third is an employee living in a furnished flat who is moving only personal belongings and a few appliances, which may be finished in a few hours with a small crew.

The point of these scenarios is that size alone does not decide the duration. A large flat can be quicker to move than a smaller one because the first is ready and organised with a lift and parking at the door, while the second has no lift and nothing wrapped.

A sample day for a three-bedroom flat

Let us take an approximate example to show the sequence of time, and we repeat that it is not a promise. The crew arrives in the morning and the supervisor goes through the list of items with you. Dismantling and wrapping of the large pieces begin in the first part of the day, followed by loading onto the truck, then the road, then unloading and assembly in the last part. Dismantling may be longer or shorter depending on the number of beds and wardrobes and on how many people have prepared their belongings. If you have a spacious lift, nearby parking and a family member receives the crew at the new site, the day may pass smoothly, but if one of these elements fails the time stretches by extra hours.

Does adding more workers always shorten the time?

Adding workers speeds things up in many cases, especially in dismantling, wrapping and loading. But it does not shorten the time indefinitely: narrow stairs and a small lift limit how many people can work at once, and adding too many can cause congestion instead of speeding things up. We suggest the crew that suits the site, and may recommend adding workers only at certain stages. If time is tight, tell us so we can assess what can be done with a larger crew and what cannot.

Time and cost: a link you should not ignore

The longer the move takes, the more it usually costs, because the hours of the crew and truck increase. So investing in preparation saves money as well as time. If you see an offer promising a very short time and a very low price, ask: will the furniture be wrapped? Will it be dismantled and reassembled? Will the crew protect the furniture and the property? The fastest move is not necessarily the best one. Our moving page explains more about the factors.

Common mistakes that lengthen a move

  • Not packing before the crew arrives.
  • Not telling the company the number of floors and that there is no lift.
  • Not arranging truck parking with management or neighbours.
  • The new site being opened late or no one being there to receive.
  • Leaving the fridge and washing machine unemptied until the moment of loading.
  • Discovering pieces that will not fit through a door at the moment of carrying instead of measuring beforehand.

Checklist for estimating and reducing the time

  • Describe your home to us: number of rooms, floor, lift and distance of truck parking.
  • Send photos of the large furniture and entrances.
  • Finish wrapping and numbering before the date.
  • Empty the fridge and washing machine the day before.
  • Coordinate the lift and parking with management and neighbours.
  • Prepare the new site and decide who will receive the crew.
  • Start in the morning if you can.
