Mattress and Bed Moving in Jeddah: Good Sleep Starts With How It Travels
A mattress and a bed are the two items you spend the most time with, yet many people treat them like ordinary pieces during a move. In truth a mattress is a delicate internal structure: springs, high-density foam or layers of medical foam, and any extra bend, dampness or pressure can change the way it feels without you knowing why. A bed is a wooden or metal frame with joints, bolts and slats that need numbering and wrapping so it comes back as it was.
At Three Knights we move mattresses and beds of all kinds in Jeddah. This page shows what we do and what we avoid, and how to prepare your mattress and bed so they arrive clean, dry and ready to sleep on. For our general approach to bedrooms read the bedroom disassembly and installation page.
Mattress Types and What Changes in Handling
- Spring (innerspring) mattresses: strong but they cannot take folding. A sharp bend may break springs or distort the filling.
- Foam and medical foam mattresses: lighter and more flexible, and they may tolerate a slight bend if needed, but they absorb moisture easily.
- Memory foam mattresses: affected by constant pressure, so nothing heavy sits on top during the move.
- Hybrid mattresses: combine springs and foam and are handled like spring mattresses.
- Children’s and cot mattresses: smaller, but they need extra cleanliness and are wrapped separately.
We ask for the mattress type, size and thickness, because a wide, thick mattress may not pass through a narrow door or a bend in the stairs. If you know the model, tell us.
Why Sleep Suffers After a Careless Move
From experience, three things damage mattresses most in a move: sharp bending to pass a narrow stair, dampness from rain, humidity or a wet cover, and heavy furniture piled on top in the truck. These may not show on the day, but weeks later they appear as sagging, creaking or a musty smell. So we use a protective cover, carry the mattress upright on its edge, and never put anything heavy on it.
Jeddah Humidity and the Risk of Mould
High humidity in Jeddah makes mattresses more vulnerable to smells and mould if they are trapped with dampness. So before the move make sure the mattress is fully dry, air it in a shaded ventilated spot if needed, and never wrap it damp. After arrival, open the cover and let it breathe before you put the bedding on. If a mattress has sat in a damp place, airing or professional cleaning is better than improvised fixes.
Mattresses also soak up dust and fine particles on dusty days, so we recommend a thick, clean cover that keeps dust out while still allowing some airflow.
Beds: Types and How We Dismantle Them
- Traditional wooden beds: we remove the headboard, legs and sides, number the parts and protect wood edges from scratches.
- Metal beds: lighter, but the joints need their bolts kept and the ends wrapped so they do not scratch walls.
- Upholstered beds with tall headboards: we protect the fabric and corners, and never carry the headboard by its padding.
- Storage and hydraulic beds: we empty the box and watch the lift pistons.
- Bunk beds: dismantled with care, with bolts kept and ladder steps numbered.
- Children’s beds and cots: we collect small parts and check stability after assembly.
For a wider explanation of numbering, dismantling and assembly see our disassembly and assembly page.
Wrapping Mattresses and Beds
We start with a clean cover that wraps the mattress completely, then add protection for the corners. Beds get blankets or foam on boards and headboards, similar parts are tied together, and bolts go in a numbered bag stuck to the piece. We avoid strong tape directly on polished wood or fabric. You can see our general method on the packing and wrapping page.
Moving Day Step by Step
- Check the route, measure doors, stairs and lift.
- Strip the bedding and gather it in clean bags.
- Wrap the mattress and carry it upright with at least two people.
- Dismantle the bed, number the parts and keep the bolts.
- Load mattresses in a clean dry spot with nothing heavy on top.
- Unload, assemble the bed and put the mattress on only after checking the base is dry.
Loading Mattresses in the Truck
Mattresses are usually loaded upright on their edge along the truck wall and strapped, or laid flat at the top of the load if nothing presses on them. We avoid putting them under heavy furniture or near wet, dirty or oily items. If there are several mattresses we separate them with a cover. In rain or dust we add protection. If your move covers several rooms, read how we handle a full apartment on the apartment moving page.
Table: How We Treat Each Type
| Type | Carrying | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Spring mattress | Upright, no folding | Never bend it |
| Foam mattress | Upright, slight bend if needed | Protect from moisture |
| Memory foam | Flat or upright | Nothing heavy on top |
| Storage bed | Dismantled after emptying | Watch the pistons |
| Upholstered bed | On its edge with a cover | Do not carry by the padding |
Measure the Mattress and the Route Before You Are Surprised
One of the most annoying moments is when a large new mattress arrives at the apartment door and will not pass. Before moving or buying, measure the width, length and thickness of the mattress, then the main door, room doors, corridor, turns and the lift width and depth. In older buildings a staircase may be narrow with a sharp turn, and a spring mattress becomes a real problem because it will not bend. If the route is unsuitable we may need to lift it from outside with a winch, explained on the winch moving page. Photos of the entrance and stairs help us decide before the day.
Bedding, Quilts and Pillows
Care does not stop at the mattress and bed. Pillows, quilts and covers absorb odours and moisture, and they are the first thing you need on the first night. We suggest washing and drying them before the move, then placing them in clean sealed bags labelled with the room, and carrying at least one set with you in the car instead of the truck. That way you sleep on clean bedding the first night even if the truck is late or the house is not yet arranged.
Avoiding Insects and Dust
Old mattresses keep dust and may carry small insects or their eggs. Before the move vacuum the mattress, clean the bed frame and underneath, and check cracks and joints. If you notice any sign of insects, treat it before the move and do not bring it into your new home. On arrival place the mattress in a clean spot and avoid laying it on the floor until the bed base is assembled. This small step keeps your new home clean from day one.
Large Mattresses and King Size Beds
Large king-size mattresses need more than two people to carry safely, because their width makes them hard to control in narrow corridors. We carry them upright with one person in front, one behind and a guide who handles doors and corners, and we avoid carrying from the middle. King beds have big boards and heavy headboards, so we dismantle them fully and wrap each board separately. For an upholstered tall headboard we carry it on its edge and protect the fabric from rubbing on lift walls.
Guest Rooms and Shared Accommodation
In some homes and shared accommodation there are several similar beds and mattresses. Numbering becomes even more important: we write the room name and bed number on each cover and tie each bed’s bolts to its own parts so nothing is mixed. If you have bunk beds for workers or children, we check stability after assembly. For moving a bachelor residence, see our affordable moving page.
What Affects the Cost
The cost depends on the number of mattresses and beds and their sizes, dismantling and assembly, the floor, lift and stairs, the distance and whether it is part of a full move or on its own. Send a list and photos on WhatsApp. For general pricing see furniture moving prices in Jeddah.
Common Mistakes
- Folding a spring mattress to pass the stairs.
- Wrapping a damp mattress in sealed plastic.
- Placing heavy furniture on mattresses in the truck.
- Forgetting to number the bed parts and bolts.
- Moving mattresses beside dirty or wet items.
- Placing the mattress on a damp base after arrival.
After the Move: The First Night
Let the mattress breathe for a few hours and make sure the bed base is level and stable. Check the boards and bolts before the mattress goes on. If the bed creaks, retighten the joints. Then make the bed with clean bedding and sleep. Do not rush to throw away protective covers before you are sure everything is in good order.
Temporary Storage of Mattresses and Beds
When the handover of the new home is delayed, you may need to store mattresses and beds for a while. Mattresses dislike damp, pressure and dust, so they should be stored upright or flat with no weight on them, inside a clean cover, in a dry air-conditioned place. Read about furniture storage in Jeddah and check the conditions before deciding.
Is It Worth Moving an Old Mattress?
If your mattress or bed is old and worn, ask yourself whether it deserves moving or replacing. We do not sell mattresses and will not push you to buy, but it is only fair to say that a mattress beyond its useful life may not be the same after a move. Send us a photo and we will give you our honest view, and the decision is yours.
Between Districts or Out of Jeddah
Within Jeddah, for example from Al-Hamdaniyah to Obhur or Al-Rawdah to Al-Shati, a short move is enough but needs care with mattresses on dusty and humid days. For other cities we increase strapping and dust protection and place mattresses above heavy furniture, not under it. See moving from Jeddah to Makkah for long routes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a mattress be folded to get through the stairs?
Light foam mattresses tolerate a slight bend, but spring and layered medical mattresses must not be folded because it can break the springs or distort the layers. We measure the route first and decide by mattress type.
Should I wrap the mattress in tightly sealed plastic?
We use a protective cover against dust and stains, without trapping moisture for long. In Jeddah we advise that the mattress is fully dry before wrapping and is not left covered for days after arrival.
How do you move storage and hydraulic beds?
We empty the storage compartment completely, secure or remove the lid depending on design, and take care that the lift pistons do not bend. Then we number the parts and keep the bolts and small pieces.
Can you dismantle upholstered beds with tall headboards?
Yes. Upholstered headboards need protection for fabric and corners, and are carried on their edge under a soft cover, never by the padding.
What should I do with the mattress after the move?
Leave it uncovered in the air for a few hours before making the bed, and make sure the base is dry and level. If you smell damp, air it in a shaded place before use.
Can used mattresses move in the same job as other beds?
Yes, and we organise loading so mattresses sit in a clean spot away from dirty or wet furniture, under a dedicated cover.
