Furniture prepared for a relocation from Jeddah
A clear timetable and early decisions on what moves and what is sold take the pressure off

Moving furniture for expats and relocating employees in Jeddah: the departure date will not wait

When an employee is transferred, an expatriate contract ends or a family decides to move to another city or country, moving turns into a race against dates that cannot shift: the lease ends, the flight leaves, the flat must be handed back and perhaps a freight container is about to depart the port. Worry piles up: what do I sell and what do I take? How should I pack for the freight company? Where does my furniture go for the few days between leaving the flat and flying out? This page is for expats and relocating employees and their families in Jeddah, to help you organise those questions and to be clear about what we do and what lies outside our work.

At Al Forsan Al Thalatha we move furniture inside Jeddah and to and from the city, and we provide packing, dismantling and reassembly, and storage. To be clear: we do not issue travel documents, clear customs or ship internationally ourselves. What we do is prepare, pack and move your furniture inside Jeddah to your next destination, such as a new home, a store or a freight forwarder's office. We do not quote invented prices or customer numbers. For the general picture see furniture moving in Jeddah, and for flats see apartment moving in Jeddah.

First decide what moves and what stays

The biggest saving in a relocation comes from shrinking the load. Ask of every item: will I need it where I am going? Is it worth the cost of moving? Could it be sold, donated or replaced? Many expats discover that buying new furniture at the destination is cheaper than shipping heavy pieces. On the other hand there are things that cannot be replaced: photographs, keepsakes, professional tools and family heirlooms. Sort your belongings into four groups:

  • Coming with me: essentials and sentimental items.
  • To sell: big furniture and appliances you will not need, advertised early.
  • To donate: what is usable but not worth moving.
  • To throw away: what is broken or expired.

Start listing things for sale weeks ahead so that departure day is lighter.

Know your next destination

The plan differs according to where you go next:

  1. A new home inside Jeddah: a direct move; see our district and service pages.
  2. Another city in the Kingdom: an intercity move; see Jeddah to Riyadh, Jeddah to Makkah and Jeddah to Madinah.
  3. Leaving the Kingdom: we prepare, pack and move your furniture and belongings inside Jeddah to the freight company's office, warehouse or port as it instructs, and you deal with it directly for shipping and clearance.
  4. Temporary storage: if you have no place ready yet, furniture can be stored for a limited time.

Dates that cannot slip

Write down these dates and tell us about them:

  • the date your lease ends and the hour you must hand the flat back;
  • the date of your flight or relocation;
  • the freight company's collection date or container cut-off, if there is one;
  • any inspection appointment with the landlord or building management.

Knowing these lets us book a crew and truck at the right time and arrange the move so that you still have time to clean and hand over.

This is only a guide, and you may need it faster if your notice is short; we handle urgent cases as far as crew availability allows, so tell us your situation early.

Packing for a long shipment: what changes

Items that will travel with a freight company need stronger packing than items moving across town. Boxes must be sturdy and padded, glassware and dishes wrapped individually, and wooden furniture covered in layers that protect it from rubbing and moisture. Freight companies often want detailed lists of what is in each box. Contact the freight company to learn its requirements for packing, numbering and inventory, then tell us and we will carry them out. You can read about furniture packing and wrapping and moving home appliances and electronics safely.

Inventory and photographs protect you

Write a detailed list of what is moving, with photographs of large furniture and appliances before packing. The list helps you on arrival at your destination, and helps the freight company or any insurer if you take out shipment insurance. Keep paper and digital copies and note the serial numbers of expensive appliances. If your employer covers moving costs, ask HR what documents they need for reimbursement, and we will cooperate where we can.

Temporary storage between leaving the flat and departure

Many expats leave the flat days before their flight. If that is you, remaining furniture can be wrapped and stored for a time matching your stay. Decide beforehand where you will stay in those days and where your luggage will go. See furniture storage in Jeddah. Furniture you do not intend to move or store should be sold or donated early, not left to the last days.

Handing the flat back to the landlord

The landlord will usually inspect the flat before returning any deposit. It should be clean, free of large holes and empty. We advise leaving final cleaning until after the furniture is out, photographing the empty flat, handing over keys and cards and cancelling services such as electricity and internet as your contract requires. We carry furniture and cover walls and doors to avoid scratches, but the landlord's inspection and handover procedures are your responsibility.

Families, children and pets

Moving between cities or countries is tiring for a family. Prepare an essentials bag for each person, leave the children's room until last to dismantle, and do not forget pet supplies and papers. For more, see moving house with kids in Jeddah. Keep children away from the truck and the carrying area.

Electrical appliances: voltage and compatibility

Before you decide to ship an electrical appliance to another country, check the voltage, plug type and frequency at your destination; some appliances will not work or will need a converter, and selling and rebuying may be cheaper. This is general information and can be checked with the freight company or the manufacturer. We move and wrap the appliance and protect it, but we do not verify its compatibility abroad.

The essentials bag and papers: never in the cartons

A few days before leaving, gather in a bag you will carry yourself: passports, residence permits, contracts, children's certificates and medical records, keys, medicines, money, small electronics and chargers. Add clothes for a day or two and toiletries. This bag stays with you whatever happens to the shipment or the schedule. Give it a fixed place in the flat so the crew does not put it on the truck by mistake. If you fly, ask the airline about permitted weights and what you may carry, and do not wait until the last day.

Single people and families: the size of the plan

A person moving alone with a few bags and little furniture needs a simple plan: perhaps a small truck or Dyna and a single trip. A family with children, several bedrooms, a kitchen and a majlis needs a larger crew and more time. If you are moving only a few items, a small truck may be enough, and for medium loads see our page on Dyna trucks for medium loads. The clearer your list, the more accurate the choice, so do not pay for a large truck for a small load.

After arrival: setting up the new home

On reaching the new home in Jeddah or another city, start with essentials: beds, kitchen and bathroom. Then arrange the other rooms in stages. Prepare a simple plan before the furniture arrives, put labels with room names on the doors, and tell the crew which pieces to assemble first. Check the furniture against your list and photographs on delivery and note any remark immediately. If you have appliances needing a technician (air-conditioning, fitted washing machine, kitchen) book him a day or two before the furniture arrives.

Moving day: the sequence

  1. The crew arrives and reviews your item list, the route and the lift.
  2. Floors and doors are covered.
  3. Furniture is dismantled and small parts bagged and numbered.
  4. Final wrapping of remaining items according to their destination.
  5. Organised loading by destination: items for freight in one batch, items for storage in another.
  6. Transport to the destination and delivery or unloading at the store.
  7. Back to clean the flat and hand it over.

What affects the price

Cost depends on the amount of furniture, the distance and destination, extra dismantling and wrapping for long shipping, storage, floors and lifts, and the date (demand rises near the end of the month and in summer). We give no general figure and estimate after the inventory and photos. See furniture moving prices in Jeddah for the factors.

Common mistakes when leaving the Kingdom or moving far

  • Deciding late what to sell: things pile up in the last days.
  • Weak packing for a long shipment: pieces get damaged.
  • No inventory or photographs: it is hard to prove condition.
  • Booking the move at the last minute: a crew may not be available in time.
  • Cleaning the flat before the furniture is out: you have to clean again.
  • Leaving papers and valuables inside the cartons: carry them with you.

Questions we ask expats and relocating employees

  1. What is your next destination and when do you move or fly?
  2. Are you moving all your furniture or part of it?
  3. Is there a freight company or an employer covering the cost?
  4. When is the flat handed back and in what condition?
  5. Do you need temporary storage?
  6. What is the size of the flat, the number of floors and the lift?
  7. Do you have an inventory or photographs of your furniture?

One last tip: start early

What exhausts people most is a pile-up of decisions in the final days. Start a month ahead if you can with a simple list: what I sell, what I donate, what I carry and what I store. Every day you do a little lightens moving day. If an employer covers your move, ask early about the baggage limit, the documents required and the approved freight company.

Summary
