Safe and Heavy Steel Cabinet Moving in Jeddah
A steel safe is not furniture; it is a heavy metal mass in a small body. A box the size of a small fridge can weigh several times more than a full wardrobe, and its centre of gravity is low and often unexpected to anyone who has not moved one. That is why things happen with safes that do not happen with other items: floors get damaged, marble stairs crack, and carriers can be seriously hurt if the work is not organised.
At Three Knights we move steel safes and home and office cabinets in Jeddah. This page explains what we do before and on the day: what we ask, how we plan for weight and route, when a winch is needed, what you should do yourself and what we refuse for everyone’s safety.
Types of Safes and What Sets Them Apart
- Small home safe: kept in a wardrobe or bedroom, heavy for its size, usually with a keyed or coded door.
- Fire safe: its thick lined walls make it heavier than expected, and the insulating layer does not tolerate hard knocks.
- Large office or commercial safe: used in shops and offices, and heavy enough that mechanical lifting may be needed.
- Wall- or floor-anchored safe: needs a specialist to release it from concrete, and we do not do drilling or removal work.
- Metal filing cabinets: lighter, but the drawers are heavy and the cabinet may tip when carried.
Before fixing a date we need from you: a photo of the safe, the maker and model if you know them, approximate dimensions and the weight if it is printed on the safe or in its booklet. If you do not know the weight, leave us to estimate it from the model and size.
Weight Is the First Problem
A safe combines thick metal with insulation layers and mechanical locks. That is why its weight is large compared with its size. The most dangerous part is that the weight sits on a small footprint, so it presses on a marble or porcelain tile with concentrated force and can crack or dent it. A load on a small dolly can also slide on an entrance slope or at a single step and turn into a hazard.
So we do not approach a safe before we know its approximate weight, its route and the floor under it. If the weight exceeds what the lift can carry we look for another solution before we start, and we do not try it by trial and error.
Before Moving Day: What You Do
- Empty the safe completely: move cash, jewellery, documents and drives yourself. We do not move valuables inside a safe.
- Lock it and keep the key or code: the safe must stay shut during the move so the door does not swing.
- Clear a path: between the safe and the door with no rugs, furniture or high thresholds.
- Measure doors and corridors: and give us the numbers with a photo of the entrance.
- Prepare truck parking: as close to the entrance as possible, and tell the management or the guard.
- If it is anchored: arrange a specialist to release it before the appointment.
The Equipment We Use
- Heavy-duty dollies with suitable wheels.
- Lifting and securing straps and thick blankets to protect the safe and the floor.
- Floor boards and protection for wall edges and doors.
- Stair-climbing equipment or lifting tools where needed, with a crew of the right size.
- An outside winch where necessary, which we describe on our winch and hydraulic lift page.
We do not use random force. Every move is coordinated within the crew, each person knows their role and position, and above all we stop as soon as we see the plan is unsafe and change the method rather than take a risk.
Floors, Walls and Lifts
In Jeddah homes and buildings floors may be marble, porcelain or parquet, all of which suffer under concentrated pressure. We put thick wooden boards under the dolly to spread the load, protect corners at doors and cover the lift floor. A standard lift must never be overloaded beyond its rated capacity, because that can disable it or trap us inside. If the lift is unsuitable we consider the stairs with great care, or lifting from outside.
Stairs: When We Avoid Them
We avoid stairs with heavy safes as far as possible, because one mistake can drop the safe onto the carriers. If stairs are the only option we need a larger crew, climbing equipment and a straight stair of adequate width with sound steps. If the steps are old marble or cracked we may decline this option and recommend outside lifting or another solution.
Jeddah Weather and the Safe
Heat and humidity in Jeddah do not harm the metal quickly, but they affect electronic locks, batteries and papers stored inside. It is better to move the safe at a time when it will not stand in the sun for long, and after the move to test the lock several times before putting valuables back. If the lock is digital, check the battery condition.
Table: What Do We Need to Know?
| Information | Why we ask |
|---|---|
| Weight and dimensions | To choose equipment and crew size |
| Floor and lift | To know if the load is suitable |
| Floor type | To choose the right protection |
| Is it anchored? | Because it needs a specialist to release it |
| Truck position | To work out the carrying distance |
How We Decide Crew Size and Equipment
There is no fixed rule for every safe, but the logic is the same: the more weight, the smaller the space and the higher the floor, the more people and equipment are needed. We start by estimating weight from model and size, then look at the route: are there steps, is the door narrow, is the floor slippery? Then we set the crew and equipment and add a safety margin. If something in the route was not visible in the photos we stop and redo the plan rather than push on. This protects the crew, your home and your safe.
Is the Safe Secure During the Move?
We do not go into security details, but the practical advice is clear: do not tell anyone what is inside the safe, do not leave it visible in the truck without need, and take the contents with you. The emptier the safe, the lower the risk and the worry. Tell whoever needs to enter the new place when it will arrive so it is not left exposed for long. We keep the safe under the crew’s supervision from lifting to unloading.
Plan the New Position Before the Move
A costly mistake is for the safe to reach the new home and then find the prepared spot does not suit it: a narrow door, a weak floor or a room far from the lift. Think before the date about the final position and the route to it, and measure the doors there too. If the safe will sit inside a purpose-built cupboard, make sure the cupboard is fixed and can bear the weight. If it is on an upper floor, consult an engineer when the weight is very large, because some buildings do not tolerate concentrated loads.
Dismantling the Furniture Around the Safe
Sometimes a safe is hidden behind furniture or inside a wooden unit and cannot be reached before that furniture is taken apart. In that case we begin by dismantling the surrounding pieces in the usual way described on our disassembly and assembly page, then deal with the safe once the route is open. If the furniture is part of fixed decor, we agree with you what can be taken apart without damage.
What We Do Not Do
We say this plainly so nobody is surprised: we do not open a locked safe, break its locks, release a safe set in concrete, or carry weapons or hazardous materials in a safe. These are outside the scope of a moving company and need licensed specialists. If the safe is locked and you do not know the code, contact the maker or a qualified technician before the move, because moving a safe of unknown condition can be dangerous.
What Affects the Cost
A safe is one of the hardest items to price because it varies with weight and dimensions, the crew and equipment required, whether there is a lift or a winch is needed, the distance between the truck and the entrance, and whether the safe is part of a larger move or alone. Please send photos on WhatsApp so we can estimate. For general pricing, see furniture moving prices in Jeddah.
Dangerous Mistakes in Moving Safes
- Relying on untrained labour to save money.
- Leaving valuables inside while carrying.
- Trying the stairs without equipment.
- Ignoring the safe’s weight against the lift’s load rating.
- Dragging it over a floor without protection boards.
- Tilting it steeply with no securing.
Safes in Offices and Shops
Many commercial safes in Jeddah sit in a back room far from the door or in a basement. Here we need coordination with management and a time when fewer customers or staff are around. If your whole office is moving, see office and corporate moving in Jeddah to learn how we plan a full move.
Between Districts or to Another City
Inside the city, for example from Al-Safa to Al-Rawdah or from Al-Hamdaniyah to Obhur, the hardest part is usually getting in and out of the two buildings, not the road. For another city, strapping inside the truck becomes the key because a long road means hours of vibration. We strap the safe to the truck wall with wide straps, place thick blankets under and around it, put nothing on top, and do not carry it near the truck doors. See moving from Jeddah to Riyadh for long routes.
After Arrival: Placing the Safe
Choose a fixed spot on strong flooring away from windows, the main entrance and damp. If the safe will be anchored to the floor or wall, use a specialist. Test the lock several times before putting valuables back, and make sure the floor will not suffer from the weight over time, especially on an upper floor.
Checklist Before the Appointment
- Photograph the safe and record the model, size and weight.
- Empty it of all valuables.
- Know whether it is anchored or free.
- Measure doors and corridors and identify the lift or stairs.
- Set the truck position and inform management.
- Plan the safe’s position in the new place.
- Check the battery of a digital lock.
A Final Safety Tip
If you are unsure of the weight or the route, do not try to move the safe yourself or with friends before we arrive. Many serious injuries happen when homeowners try to shift a safe a little and it slides onto someone’s foot. Leave it where it is, send us the photos, and let the plan be drawn up before anyone touches it. In heavy work, patience is the shortest road to a safe home and a move without losses.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you move heavy steel safes?
Yes, once we know the size, approximate weight, floor and access route. A safe can weigh hundreds of kilograms and needs lifting equipment, a trained crew and sometimes a winch.
Should I leave valuables inside the safe during the move?
We do not advise it. Empty the safe of cash, jewellery and valuable documents and carry them yourself. The safe travels empty and locked so nothing shifts inside.
What about safes fixed into a wall or floor?
A safe anchored with bolts or set into concrete needs a specialist to release and refit it, which is outside the scope of moving. We move the safe once it is free, and coordinate the sequence with you.
Does a safe need a winch?
It depends on the weight, the floor, the lift and the stairs. Lifts have a rated load, and some safes exceed what a standard lift should carry, so outside lifting or special planning may be needed.
Can you move a small home fire safe?
Yes. It is lighter but still heavy for its size. It travels closed, is carried from the sides and not by the door, and is protected from knocks.
Do I need special insurance for a safe move?
That depends on the value of the contents and your insurer’s policy. We do not make insurance promises here, and we suggest you check your own policy and carry valuable contents yourself.
