Two pieces that call for a different mindset: leather and marble
Leather furniture and marble tops are among the pieces that are hardest to replace and that show any damage. Leather reacts to heat, rubbing and humidity, so it cracks, changes color or sticks to plastic wraps if it is wrapped in them during Jeddah's heat. Marble is heavy, cold and brittle at the edges, and a small knock or a wrong grip can break it. When both are in one home, such as a leather sofa with a marble coffee table, the move needs a calm plan that knows what each piece needs in protection, crew and loading.
On this page we explain how to treat each type, which mistakes repeat, and what to prepare before moving day, without figures or exaggeration, and while accepting that each piece differs by make, age and finish.
Leather furniture: what harms it in transit?
The first enemy of leather is high heat combined with rubbing. Natural and faux leather are both affected, and the surface can turn tacky in hot weather if it is wrapped in clingy plastic, then leave marks when the wrap is removed. The second enemy is sharp objects: nails, keys, screws and metal edges in the truck scratch leather in ways that are hard to repair. The third is long pressure in a distorted position, such as heavy items stacked on a leather backrest which then leave a permanent dent in the padding. The fourth is moisture, which can cause stains or smells.
- Do not wrap leather directly in clingy plastic in hot weather.
- Use a cotton or paper layer first, then a protective cover.
- Keep leather away from metal edges and sharp tools.
- Do not place heavy loads on backs or cushions.
- Avoid long exposure to direct sunlight.
Wrapping steps for leather sofas and chairs
We begin by gently dusting the piece and taking off removable cushions, which are wrapped separately. Then we cover the piece with cotton cloth or a soft cover that lets leather breathe, add foam or cardboard at the corners and legs, and finish with an outer cover that keeps dust out without sticking to the leather. Wooden or metal legs are wrapped in foam, and the sofa is lifted by its frame, not by its cushions or thin arms. A corner or multi-part sofa is separated into sections, numbered, wrapped and loaded in the order in which it will be assembled.
For electric recliners we disconnect the cables and secure moving parts. For more on taking apart and wrapping, see furniture disassembly and assembly in Jeddah and furniture packing in Jeddah.
Marble: why it is heavier than people think
Marble is very dense, and a small piece can weigh more than a wooden piece twice its size. A large coffee-table top may need two or three people. At the same time it is brittle at its edges and corners and can crack from a sideways knock or uneven pressure. So marble is never carried from one end, never rested on its thin edge, and never moved tilted flat with no support. In assembled tables the marble is usually a top that rests on a wooden or metal base, and in most cases the top is separated from the base before moving.
Preparing marble surfaces for the move
We start by dusting the surface, then add a soft layer, then foam or reinforced cardboard corners on every edge, then a sheet of cardboard or thin board on each face, and finally wrap everything in a strong cover. The top is carried upright on its long edge by at least two people, rested on a padded board when loaded and strapped down. Nothing is placed on marble, and it is never pushed against sharp objects. If there is an old crack or a previous repair, we tell you to take extra care and recommend photographing it before lifting.
Table: piece, main risk and main precaution
| Piece | Biggest risk | Main precaution |
|---|---|---|
| Leather sofa | Heat, scratching and sticking | Cotton cover before the protective wrap |
| Leather chair | Pressure and sharp objects | Foam on legs and lifting by the frame |
| Marble top | Breakage and weight | Upright carry by a team with padded corners |
| Metal or wooden base | Scratching | Separate disassembly and wrapping |
| Sofa with electric recliners | Cables and moving parts | Disconnect cables and secure parts |
Jeddah heat and humidity and their effect on leather
In summer the inside of a closed truck or an uncovered pickup can get hotter than leather tolerates easily, so its surface dries or softens abnormally. For that reason we avoid loading leather in the hottest hours, prefer early morning or after the afternoon prayer, and avoid leaving it in direct sun while waiting. On humid days we give it a chance to breathe after arrival by taking off the covers gradually instead of leaving plastic on for hours. Marble is not much affected by humidity, but sudden temperature change can stress small cracks already in it.
Loading and securing in the truck
We place leather sofas away from metal objects and heavy appliances, lean them against the wall between pillows or covers, and avoid stacking heavy furniture on them. Marble tops stand upright on their long edge, leaning on the wall with pillows and straps, away from vibration. Marble is not loaded last near the door where there is the most movement, but in a steady place in the middle of the body.
Arrival and reassembly
On arrival we remove covers gradually and place the sofa in position away from direct sun and strong air-conditioner vents. We reassemble the bases and then set the marble tops on them carefully and with a team, checking that the top is level and the base stable. Small pads between the base and the marble help prevent scratching and sliding. If you want to clean or polish the leather, consult a specialist about the leather type and do not use strong products right after arrival.
Large sets: corner and majlis sofas
Many homes in Jeddah have majlis seating or large corner sets covered in leather or similar materials, and they may consist of four or five parts that are hard to bring in at once. Before moving we identify which parts separate, and check the route from the door to the room, because some sets will not pass narrow doors unless taken apart or tilted with care. We number the parts, write their position on the cover and keep the screws and connectors in one bag attached to the piece. At the new home we assemble the set in the same order and test its stability before anyone sits on it.
Natural or faux leather: why does it matter?
You may not know exactly what type of leather your furniture has, and that is normal. But knowing the type helps in choosing protection: old faux leather may peel with rubbing or extreme heat, while natural leather may darken or crack if it dries out. If you know the type, tell us; if not, tell us the age of the piece and any peeling or cracks that already exist, and we will treat it with extra care. Photographing these marks before the move keeps your rights and records the original condition.
Marble in kitchens, bathrooms and service areas
Marble is not found only in tables; some homes have kitchen worktops, bathroom shelves or marble side tables. Surfaces fixed to walls or cabinets are not normally moved with the flat, and if they are being moved, removing them needs a stone specialist. Side tables and consoles that are movable are treated as above: separate top and base and carried upright. Note that some tops are glued with strong adhesive, and separating them without experience may break them, so do not try to detach them yourself.
Cleaning pieces before and after wrapping
Clean leather furniture with a soft dry cloth before wrapping so no grit is trapped under the cover to scratch the surface. For marble, wipe with a damp cloth and dry it well, and avoid acidic or harsh products. After the move wipe the pieces again once the covers are off and wait until everything is dry before sitting or putting items down. Avoid placing hot cups or acidic drinks directly on marble, and use small coasters.
Moving day order for leather and marble
Delicate pieces are best loaded at a quiet time of the day, not in the rush of crowded corridors. We start by taking out removable cushions and covers, then wrap sofas where they stand, then carry them to the truck in order of closeness to the door. Marble is carried after the route has been cleared of small items and bags, with two people leading the lift and a third opening doors and watching the edges. We do not let marble move during the busiest entry and exit, because a small knock against a door frame can leave a crack.
At the new home we first prepare the floor under the pieces, spreading protection if the floor is marble or wood, then bring in the bases, then the marble tops, then the sofas, so that sofas stay wrapped for as long as possible and are not exposed to dust during unloading. If you have children or pets, keep them away from the carrying route, because leather cannot take claw scratches and marble cannot take heavy toys hitting it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a leather sofa be wrapped in plastic?
Not directly. We cover it first with cotton cloth or soft paper and then a protective wrap, since clingy plastic can stick to leather in the heat.
How do you carry a marble top?
Upright on its long edge by at least two people, with padded corners, protective boards and straps in the truck.
Do you take apart a corner sofa?
Yes, if its parts detach. We number them, keep the screws and reassemble in the same order.
Does heat harm leather in transit?
It can, so we prefer cooler hours and avoid leaving it in the sun or in a very hot closed body.
What if the marble already has a crack?
Tell us beforehand and photograph it; we will handle it with extra care and a suitable team.
