Moving from Jeddah to Hail: a trip to the north across open desert roads

Hail is a city in the north-centre of Saudi Arabia, a considerable distance from Jeddah, which makes a move there one of the longest furniture trips we organise inside the Kingdom. Unlike the trip to the southern highlands, the road to Hail mostly crosses open, desert terrain, with hot days, cold winter nights, and winds that carry dust at some times of year. These conditions call for a particular kind of preparation: tight dust protection, strong securing against vibration, careful planning of stops, and early coordination with the receiving address.

This page explains how we plan this trip, what you should prepare in Jeddah, what changes because of distance and climate, and how we arrange receiving and assembly in Hail. We say in advance that we do not quote precise distances and do not promise a fixed arrival time, because that depends on the route, the volume of furniture and road conditions, and we set the schedule once we know the details.

What makes this trip different?

The first thing is the length of the journey: a move to Hail needs in most cases at least a full day and sometimes more depending on the load, the stops and conditions. The route often passes through or near Madinah depending on the suitable road, which can help in arranging a stop or rest, but we decide the actual route when we agree the job. The second is climate: the summer is extremely hot in the daytime and the winter is cold at night, sometimes dropping a lot, which affects appliances, upholstery and timber. The third is the nature of the open road, which demands more protection from dust, sand and crosswinds.

Dust and wind: tight covering comes first

On open roads wind and dust are the biggest enemies of furniture in transit. We therefore cover each piece with suitable covers, then cover the whole load with an extra sheet where needed, tape up all openings and drawers, and place mattresses and sofas away from gaps. Wrapping electrical appliances is especially important because fine dust can enter ventilation openings and settle inside. Our packing and wrapping service describes the types of cover available.

Heat by day, cold by night: the effect on furniture and appliances

The big swing between daytime heat and night-time cold can affect some materials. Timber may expand and contract, mattresses and foam can be affected, and electronics and glass may not like rapid change. So we avoid leaving sensitive furniture in a closed truck in midday sun for long hours in summer and arrange stops so the load is in shade or a suitable place where possible. In winter nights can be very cold, so we delay switching appliances on after arrival until they return gradually to room temperature. Our packing tips add more detail.

Preparation in Jeddah: what we do before departure

We start with a careful inventory of furniture and belongings, then dismantle wardrobes, beds and large tables, number the parts and keep screws in labelled bags, and wrap mattresses, sofas, mirrors and glass. We empty and dry appliances and secure their doors. We arrange boxes with heavy ones at the bottom and light ones on top and write the room name on each. We advise preparing a personal bag that travels with you holding important papers, medicines and valuables. These items must not be left on the truck between cities.

Arranging and securing the load for a long desert trip

The basic principle is that the load must not move. We arrange furniture so that pieces sit snug against each other and against the walls of the body where possible, fill gaps with covers and mattresses, and use securing straps at several levels. We avoid placing fragile appliances and glass in positions that suffer the most vibration. On long trips we check the securing at stops, because constant vibration can slacken straps gradually. This periodic check is a simple measure but it protects the load in the later stages of the journey.

The trip plan step by step

  1. Agree the loading date and route and name the person receiving in Hail.
  2. Load and wrap in Jeddah and prepare the inventory list.
  3. Secure and make a final check, then depart at a suitable time.
  4. Rest stops, checks on the load and attention to heat.
  5. Arrival in Hail and coordination with the receiver.
  6. Unloading, assembly, placing items in rooms and checking the inventory.

Choosing the departure time matters in summer: we prefer the crew to avoid the fiercest midday heat where possible, and in winter we take night cold into account. We discuss these points with you when we set the schedule.

Getting ready in Hail: the new home

Before the truck arrives make sure the house or flat is ready: electricity and water, keys, cleanliness, and someone to receive the crew. Send us the exact address and a description of the entrance, the floor, whether there is a lift and where the truck can park. In some newer districts streets may not be complete, so photos of the way to the house help us plan. If the home is not ready, temporary storage can be arranged; see our storage page.

Villas and standalone houses: the most common type

In many northern cities villas and standalone houses are common, which usually means more furniture, more rooms and wider entrances. We need a bigger crew and trips divided according to the volume of furniture, perhaps two trucks. To see how we handle villas read our furniture moving page. If you have outdoor furniture such as yard seating and parasols, tell us so we can plan for it.

Outdoor furniture, rest houses and homes with yards

In many parts of the north people own homes with large yards or rest houses with outdoor seating, parasols, barbecues and tents. These items suffer from sun and dust more than indoor furniture, and can be large and awkward in shape. We dismantle what we can, cover fabrics and cushions, and arrange long pieces so they do not press on others. Heavy metal items go at the bottom and are firmly secured. Tell us about them before the date so we can estimate the truck space needed.

The first days after arrival: letting furniture adjust

After a long trip between two climates, furniture needs a few days to adjust. We recommend leaving timber furniture for a few hours after unpacking before pointing air conditioning or heating directly at it, and avoiding placing it near heater vents or a very cold air conditioner in the first days. If you notice a screw or joint has loosened, tighten it after a few days; this is normal after the vibration of a long trip. If there is obvious damage, photograph it straight away and tell us so we can discuss it with you at the time.

Hot summers and cold winters: when to travel?

There is no perfect date for everyone, but each season has its own notes. In summer the main risk is extreme heat, so we prefer an early start, avoid midday where possible and protect appliances and mattresses. In winter the risk may be night cold and wind, so we keep appliances and glass away from sudden change and delay switching appliances on after arrival. If you can choose your date, read our planning guide and discuss it with us.

Large appliances and the kitchen

Fridges, washing machines and any air conditioners being moved need special care on a long trip. We empty and dry them, secure them upright and wrap them against dust, and we suggest delaying switching them on for several hours after arrival to settle. Kitchenware is wrapped and placed in small boxes marked fragile. Our packing tips give more detail.

Staying in touch during the trip and handling delays

We agree with you who will contact you and at which stages: loading, departure, long stops and expected arrival. If there is a delay because of the road, the weather or dust we tell you at once. Some weather in the north, such as dust storms or sudden rain, can affect the schedule, so we do not promise a fixed time, but we make sure you hear from us as things happen.

Items we do not advise sending on the truck

Some items are better travelling with you in your own car than in the furniture truck: official papers and documents, medicines, jewellery and cash, small valuable electronics, flammable materials and anything you need in the first two days. This split gives you peace of mind and reduces the number of things to check at handover.

What affects the price

We do not publish fixed prices for intercity moves. The estimate depends on the volume and weight of furniture, the distance and route, the number of crew travelling, wrapping, dismantling and assembly, the number of floors at both ends, and the timing and stops. We give you an estimate once you describe the load and send photos. See our moving page for the general factors.

  • Switching appliances on as soon as they arrive.
  • Not preparing the new home, or leaving keys with someone unavailable.
  • Relying on a fixed arrival time with no allowance for weather.

Checklist before the trip to Hail

  • Fix the loading date and the receiver in Hail and send the address and photos.
  • Prepare the essentials bag and key papers that travel with you.
  • Empty the fridge and washing machine at least a day ahead.

Moving from Hail to Jeddah

As we move from Jeddah to Hail, we also move in the other direction for people relocating to Jeddah for work or study. Preparation and wrapping are similar, and in Jeddah we take account of the higher humidity when furniture arrives after a dry journey, and arrange truck parking and the lift at the new site. Contact us to set the plan.

Other cities in the north and centre

If your destination is another city, we have pages for several routes, such as moving from Jeddah to Buraydah and from Jeddah to Tabuk. If your destination is near Hail, ask us about it when you get in touch.

How to contact us and agree the plan

Call us or send a WhatsApp message with the approximate volume of furniture, the pick-up and delivery addresses, photos of large pieces and your preferred date. We arrange the plan and crew with you and agree the details before loading. We do not promise a fixed arrival time, but we give a clear schedule and tell you about any change.
